General Information

Argos was founded by Richard Tompkins and began trading in 1973 with its first catalogue and store. It opened its first custom build store in Canterbury. It started with approximately 1,000 staff members and its first catalogue had over 200 pages and over 4,000 items.  The  advertising slogan was “Buy it at Argos and pocket the difference”.

In November 1975 it achieved its 1st million pound week and by the end of the 1970′s it had 91 stores that had  a combined turnover of £112 million. In 1980 it opened it first “Elizabeth Duke Jewellery” boutique and celebrates the opening of its 100th store.

By 1981 it had becomes the 4th largest Jewellery retailer in Britain. In 1990 it launched Argos direct and de-merged from its parent company BAT industries. In 1991 Argos PLC was listed on the London stock exchange.

In 1998 it was brought by Great Universal Stores PLC (GUS) . In 1999 Argos Additions was trialed in several  superstores and the  slogan changed to “Brighter Shopping”. Customer reviews will be added to this page shortly.

In 2003 it won the Retailer of the Year awards. It currently has a huge range of over 30,000 great value products from various categories such as Kitchen & Laundry,jewellery and watches, Home and furniture, Garden & DIY,Home entertainment & many more. The company has become famous for its huge clearance and sales events.
